You can use Facebook Safety Check during a flood.

Natural disasters can affect anyone in any community. That’s why it’s so important to have emergency kits in your home and car and to know how to handle major weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and winter storms.

With all luck, your preparation will ensure your safety. But how would you tell your friends and family you’re okay?

One easy way to do that is with the new Facebook Safety Check feature. With one tap of your finger, you can alert your entire network that you (and any friends you’re with) are out of harm’s way. Facebook Safety Check gives you two choices: “I’m safe” or “I’m not in the area.” Once you select your choice, it will create a story in your newsfeed.

Facebook began developing a similar feature after the 2011 Japan tsunami. Perhaps it’s significant that Facebook Safety Check debuted just before the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. While a natural disaster is a stressful experience, it becomes much easier to deal with when you know your loved ones are safe.
