The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more people die in motor vehicle crashes on Independence Day than any other day of the year. (New Year’s Day is a close second). Why? Motorcycles and alcohol both contribute to the trend.
The statistics show, too, that motorcyclists themselves are most at risk. If you ride this weekend, ride safe and take the road less traveled (aka, avoid the highway). And whether you’re riding or driving or even staying home this holiday, remember these safety tips:
On the road:
- Don’t drink and drive. It’s just not worth it.
- Wear a helmet
- Drive the speed limit
- Keep distractions to a minimum
At home:
- Use sparklers safely
- Obey state laws for fireworks
- Party with a plan to keep everyone safe (and happy)
