Engineering seniors Viet Tran and Seth Robertson at George Mason University are developing a new approach to putting out flames – sound waves that can extinguish fire. While the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters have investigated using sound to extinguish flames before, the research was only limited to the sound of the human voice. Tran’s and Robertson’s research has been more extensive. Their vision includes making the science applicable to kitchen fires, building fires and possibly forest fires, making it easier and less dangerous to put out the flames.
Of course, the best way to avoid fire damage is to avoid a fire in the first place. Take our fire safety quiz to test your knowledge on preventing fires.
